Rwanda Gorilla Adventure

Rwanda Gorilla Adventure

Day 1 - Arrive Kigali, Rwanda

Upon arrival at Kigali Airport, transfer to your hotel, the Kigali Serena Hotel.
In the afternoon, join your guide on a City Tour of Kigali – including the Memorial and Crafts Centers. Visit the Kandt Museum, tour old Kigali and the Craft centres, visit the genocide memorial site where you learn about Rwanda’s history pre-colonial to 1994 genocide as well as other genocides in the world. Tour more and see the new developments; the recovery has been incredible, a true testament to humankind’s resilience.

Day 2 - Kigali - Nyanza - Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, drive south to Nyanza, the historical seat of the Rwanda kingdom; visit the Royal Palace, which has been restored, entirely of traditional materials, to its 19th century grandeur. Further south at the University town of Butare; visit the National Museum, which houses perhaps the greatest ethnographic collection in East and Central Africa. After stopping for lunch at a local restaurant, proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park arriving at Nyungwe Forest Lodge in time for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 - Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a half day forest trek in search of the Angola Colobus monkeys which can be found here in troops of several hundred; the largest, can be up to 450 individuals. Depending on your preference, this trek can last as long as 6 hours and is an absolutely amazing experience, to see so many Colobus monkeys at the same time; 50-60 at a given time.
Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, tour a nearby tea plantation; an excellent way of interacting with the local farmers, know them, hear their stories and challenges, and make friends.

Day 4 - Nyungwe Forest National Park - Lake Kivu

In the morning, you will drive to Kibuye on the shores of Lake Kivu, with stops at local markets along the way. Enjoy a delightful lunch at the Cormoran Lodge. Continue to Gisenyi on the northern end of the lake arriving at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in the evening.
Lake Kivu is the largest of numerous freshwater lakes that shimmer in the valleys of Rwanda. Set amid the dramatic mountains of the rift valley and the virungas to the north, their irregular shores form numerous inlets and peninsulas and myriad forest-fringed waterfalls.

Day 5 - Lake Kivu - Parc National de Volcans

This morning is spent at your leisure at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel.
After lunch, enjoy a leisurely drive through the Rwandan countryside to the foothills of the Virungas. You will arrive at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge in the late afternoon where you will be staying for 2 nights in your private guest cottage.

Day 6 - Parc National de Volcans

After an early breakfast, drive to the Volcanoes National Park to be allocated a gorilla tracking group. At 7 am you'll receive a briefing by your trackers then drive to the trail-head for the start of an amazing adventure.
Your exhilarating trek, in the footsteps of the rare and critically endangered Mountain Gorillas, the largest living primate on earth, starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virungas with stirring views in all directions.
Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young. Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth!
In the afternoon, you tour to the nearby ex-poacher’s village. An award-winning conservation initiative, former poachers were convinced to renounced their old ways and become conservation activists. Together with their families, they founded this little village where they now participate in eco-tourism showcasing Rwandan culture.

Day 7 - Parc Natinal de Volcans - Kigali

After an early breakfast, drive to the Volcanoes National Park HQs where you will be allocated a Golden Monkeys tracking group. At 7 am you'll receive a briefing by your trackers, then drive to the trail-head for the tracking.
The very beautiful Golden Monkey has a golden body, cheeks and tail with contrasting black limbs, crown, and tail end. Not much is known about their behavior; other than they live in social groups of up to 30 individuals and their diet consists mainly of leaves and fruit.
Tracking usually takes from 2 to 4 hrs. Once you come to the habituated families, you will spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life; adult monkeys frolic in plain view, feeding on bamboo leaves and leaping from perch to perch while females carry their young, completely oblivious of on-lookers.
Afterwards, trek back to base and drive to the lodge for a deserved shower then lunch. Following lunch, drive back to Kigali and check in to the now familiar Kigali Serena Hotel.

Day 8 - Kigali - Depart Kigali

After breakfast you will transferred to Kigali airport in time for your international departure flight.
